From Lab to Community
In the ViDaB Lab, we believe that science transcends the boundaries of the laboratory and must engage directly with the community. Our mission is driven by the understanding that knowledge alone is not enough; it takes partnership and collaboration to foster a brighter future for everyone. By actively involving community members in our research and initiatives, we aim to translate scientific discoveries into tangible benefits that address local needs and aspirations.
We are passionate about bringing science to the community and are committed to participating in educational events! If you would like to organize an event with us or invite us to yours, please contact us at alex.veglia@upr.edu and we would love to discuss!

Operation Viral Christmas!
Operation Viral Christmas is an initiative concieved by our very own Alan Figueroa and then adopted as an annual tradition in the ViDaB Lab! During the holiday season, we conduct a donation drive to collect essential goods, including food, toys, and other gifts. These collected items are then distributed to families and children in under-resourced coastal communities in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, during a special event during the holiday season.

Operation Viral Christmas 2024 was a success!! Over 40 gifts and food items were delivered to homes in Barria el Seco in Mayaguez!
Olas de Cambio Initiative
Olas de Cambio is a dynamic initiative designed to empower students and community members throughout Puerto Rico by providing access to valuable training and opportunities. We strive to foster growth and development through hands-on learning, skill-building workshops, and professional mentorship. Our first workshop, "Olas de Cambio Taller I" held in June 2024, exemplified this mission by offering undergraduate students from Puerto Rican universities a 6-day immersive experience in marine science. Organized in collaboration with Head Above Water and EcoAzul, the workshop provided training in essential field skills, explored various disciplines within marine science, and incorporated professional and personal development sessions, including financial literacy, to prepare students for successful careers in the field. Check out more from our first workshop here!
